The 2026 Pennsylvania Boating and Fishing Handbook is available at Tunlar Agency's office on Route 590 West.
If you own or use a boat, or you're a passenger in or upon a Vessel, then you need to become familiar with the laws regarding the use of a Life Jacket, or PFD (personal flotation device).
Even experienced navigators can encounter situations beyond their control, no matter the boating skills and level of experience. A pleasant day of boating can change suddenly, taking an unexpected turn where seconds count. Familiarize yourself with your watercraft, the PA Boating Regulations, use the buddy system, and keep a watch on the weather.
A valid life jacket is a USCG (United States Coast Guard) approved device that is in good working order, fits the intended user, and is readily accessible.

Boater Safety Courses are held throughout the lake region during the Spring and Summer months, and are readily available online. Consider taking one with your family. They're required for Personal Watercraft use in PA, and for individuals born on or after January 1, 1982, who operate a motorboat over 25 horsepower. Proof of course completion must be carried while out on the waterways. A list of course locations is posted at our office, or the PFBC website.
What is a Vessel? A vessel is any watercraft designed for transportation on water, commonly referred to as a "boat" under Title 30, PA Fish and Boat Code. This includes powered boats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and sailboats.
Are you familiar with the Pennsylvania Cold Weather Rule? From November 1st, through April 30th, a life jacket must be worn on boats less than 16 feet, as well as on all canoes and kayaks. Vessels 16' and over, must carry a throwable flotation device.

Life jackets save lives. Whether you're enjoying Lake Wallenpaupack, kayaking down the Lackawaxen River, or enjoying a rafting trip on the mighty Delaware, you need to become familiar with the boating regulations, and personal safety devices that are required.
Weather can change, inuries can occur, and sudden medical emergencies can present quickly. Be prepared to keep your head above water if you find yourself, and others, in a challenging situation.
