We get it: you're buying a boat trailer at Lake Wallenpaupack and will use it a handful of times, or twice a year, at most. 1st to launch, 2nd to haul it back to your yard for winter storage.

Why do you need to Title your Boat Trailer?
It's simple, and we see it a lot. You received the MCO/MSO - or the Title - if it was a used boat purchase (transferable registration card if it's from another state). You never transferred it into your name because it really wasn't going far. Usually just within your community, and in some cases, never out on the highway. The problem presents at a later date, when you go to sell, or trade-in the boat and trailer.
In PA, you cannot skip title: it's illegal. Maybe the previous owner passed. Now you have a situation where it needs to be titled by YOU, or the estate, in order to legally transfer ownership, and this process may cause significant delays with your sale. You held onto the documents for so long, and now the original owner is nowhere to be found, is uncooperative, or deceased. Maybe you just lost the mco/mso/title.
Do you know who needs to apply for a Duplicate Pennsylvania Title, or out-of-state Transferable Registration Card? Not you, the previous owner, or a representative of their estate will need to.
Once you purchase a new or used trailer, we highly recommend that you immediately apply for a Title in PA if you're a resident of this state (and Registration if you will be using it on the roadways). Out-of-state residents will need to apply at the DMV in their home state of residency to receive either a title or transferable registration card. PA issues titles, and those titles will require the seller's signature to be notarized when transferring ownership.
Once received back from the state, keep your Title and ownership documents in a safe storage location, away from the boat. One where you'll be able to find them, when you want to sell or trade-in your trailer, or where your family members can locate them if you pass.
