Verification of Weights and When It's Needed for DMV Work

Verification of Weights (the unladen or empty weight, and the gross vehicle weight of a Vehicle or Trailer), is required in Pennsylvania when you Title and Register a truck, work van, or trailer that's new with a MCO/MSO, or coming into PA with an out-of-state title. Vehicles aready titled in Pennsylvania should have this detail listed, but verification may be required if you're changing the registered weight class.

The gross vehicle weight rating is critical to Title and Register in PA. It can be found on a tag or sticker attached to the frame of a truck, van, or trailer, on the door panel, or on the B-pillar. Weights can be checked when you visit our office, if accessible. If the weights cannot be located, then you will need to get a weight slip done at a facility providing that service (local quarry or weigh station), or use PennDOT Form MV-41 to have a PA Inspection Mechanic verify the weights.

Some vehicles and trailers may need to have the Gross Combination Weight Rating verified, depending on how it's being registered and used. We can assist with a VIN Verification to verifiy weights if they're accessible, but we do not weigh vehicles at our location.

Before making the trip in, always call ahead to confirm exactly what documents and details are needed. Some vehicles and trailers are quick and easy work, while others require more time and verifications. In some cases, an Enhanced Inspection may be required by PennDOT.
