That's right, DCNR is strictly enforcing the insurance requirement for
ATV's, UTV's, and Side-by Machines for new registration, transfers, and renewals.
Insurance proof must list the specific machine and match what's on the DCNR application.
Golf carts that were once the go-to ride for lake communities, are gradually being replaced by the more stable UTV/SxS Machines, and the newer electric vehicles.
They used to be easy to insure, and cost about $50 to $75/year on premium.
While still popular, they are not required to be registered in Pennsylvania (with the possible exception of some NEV (new electric vehicle) type machines. Many of the lake communities require Golfcarts to be registered with your HOA, and you'll most likely need to provide proof of Liability Insurance. Just a note, you will not be able to register GOLFCARTS with PA DCNR like you can for ATV, UTV, and Side-by Machines.
Use caution when impulse buying one of the newer electric type "golfcart" style vehicles, with all the bells and whistles, that could potentially be registered for road use. PA is getting more strict with the guidelines, and insurance coverage has become more challenging for these machines.
If the machine has a 17 digit VIN (vehicle identification number) it may not be considered a GOLFCART for Insurance Purposes. While we do have one carrier that will insure them, insurance companies have them on the radar due to their potential for being registered for road use, and their potential misuse by youthful operators, overloading, and carrying contents not designed to be on a golfcart. You may need to insure them on your auto insurance policy, and this may be an issue for seasonal homeowners who keep them at their 2nd home in PA. Suddenly, your $75/year golfcart insurance may inflate to hundreds, in premium when you go to add newly purchased machine that could potentially be legally driven on roadways.
Golcarts are typically slow moving, electric or gas, such as EZ-GO and Yamaha styles, and typically go less than 20mph. Anything over that may not qualify for the golfcart program.They usually don't have the safety features that newer vehicles have, like mirrors, blinkers, seatbelts, wipers. Use caution. We know the newer machines are generally much safer, but know what you're buying and how to properly insure it before making a costly commitment.
Golfcarts are wildly popular for transporation around the lake communities, making it easy to carry items from your house to the lake. They can tend to be overloaded, with more occupants than originally designed to carry, and may tip easier, be more challenging to maneuver on roadways at higher speeds, may have challenges with braking, and don't really go off-road. While they're not able to be registered for road use, many communities allow them to be used on their private roadways. This places you at greater risk of encountering other vehicles. Make sure your policy covers the exposures you may encounter, like uninsured and underinsured motorist liability coverage.
